The Spokane City Council voted 6-1 to pass an ordinance changing the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The council listened to more than two hours of public testimony, both for and against the change. Local tribe members were in attendance, speaking about why this ordinance is so important.

“Recognizing one race should not take away from another,” City Council member Karen Stratton said.

Those against the change argued they want to honor Christopher Columbus and think changing the national holiday’s name disrespects their Italian heritage.

Columbus Day is celebrated the second Monday in October. This year, Indigenous Peoples’ Day falls on October 10.
