Bangor headed for coldest week in 40 years

NewImage“The length and severity of this week’s chill is rare,” says meteorologist.

28 Dec 17 – Yesterday, the temperature in Bangor, Maine, dropped to minus 9°F (-22.8°C).

If the cold continues for seven days, as predicted, it would place Bangor just shy of the all-time record set in January 1971 of eight consecutive days with temperatures below 10 degrees.

The second longest stretch came in 1979, when the mercury stayed below 10 degrees for six straight days in mid-February.

Record-breaking or not, the length and severity of this week’s chill is rare for this time of year in Bangor, said Priscilla Farrar, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Caribou.

Tonight’s overnight low is predicted at 11 below zero, and Friday’s daytime high is only 7.
