Rethinking Deinstitutionalisation

Lots of data is coming out about the school shooters. Almost to a person, they are: 

  • Male
  • From a broken home with no father present
  • Have been evaluated for mental disorders. 
  • Are on psychiatric medications, specifically anti-depressants. 

I just finished reading this article I am Adam Lanza’s mother: My son threatens to kill me; I’ve tried everything; everything is not enough

It’s sobering. 

When I was a child, there was a psychiatric hospital for the mentally insane nearby. There was also a school for kids with mental disorders. 

Back in the 1960s, they closed the school and insisted that deinstitutionalisation and push-in / mainstreaming was the only way to go. 

I grant that there were lots of terrible abuses in the early 1900s with mental institutions, but we have flushed the mentally ill into the prison population. We have pushed kids that are dangerous to themselves and to others into the standard government schools, and it is not until they act out that they get put into prison.
