Crime down in Moscow, but on rise countywide

Still, rate is below past years and the state average.

One year after the Idaho State Police’s annual crime report noted crime was down significantly in Latah County in 2015 – even with a triple murder on the books – the same annual report for 2016 showed a countywide crime increase of 3.4 percent.

The state of Idaho showed a 5.4 percent increase in overall crime reported.

The report documents criminal offenses reported and cleared, along with arrests of juveniles and adults in 2016, and shows that while crime is up in the county, the numbers remain lower than those of 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Moscow

Violent crimes reported in Moscow included 76 simple assaults – a threat or attempt to do bodily violence – compared to 81 in 2015, and 15 aggravated assaults (11 in 2015), defined as assault with a deadly weapon or force to commit great bodily harm.

Two rapes were also included in the report.

Reports of larceny, the theft of personal property, were the most prevalent, with 398 incidents reported, compared to 469 in 2015. This was followed by 128 instances of vandalism (150 in 2015), 110 drug-related offenses (84), 14 reports of counterfeiting or forgery, 70 burglaries (65), 68 reports of fraud (40) and a robbery (2).

Other, less frequent 2016 crimes included 16 car thefts (2), nine weapons law violations (2), six pornography (1), three embezzlement (2), two arson, two extortion or blackmail (1) and one stolen property case.

Kidnapping, prostitution, manslaughter, gambling, intimidation and bribery were on the list of zero crimes reported.

The Sheriff’s Office reported an 11.8 percent increase in crimes and a 2.5 percent increase in arrests.
