The WSU College Republican President was marching alongside the white nationalists at the Charlottesville protest.
WSU student and College Republican President James Allsup has resigned effectively immediately according to now acting president Amir Rezamand. The resignation follows an embattled weekend for the well-known college activist. On Monday, the College Republican National Committee called on all leaders within their organization who supported or condoned the activities in Charlottesville to resign immediately. Likewise, the reaction was heavy and swift from students and administrators on campus. This after details emerged Sunday afternoon revealing that the WSU student was at the rally and had marched alongside white nationalists. The large group could be seen holding tiki-torches, while some waved the Confederate and Nazi flags. The late-Friday rally sparked protests Saturday, killing one and injuring at least 19 when a vehicle plowed into a crowd. Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle denounced the act as domestic terrorism. WSU President Kirk Schulz released his statement on Twitter Monday morning, “We strongly denounce racism and Nazism of any kind and condemn the violence that occurred in Charlottesville.” Going on to affirm the university’s commitment to challenging and combatting racism. Congresswomen Cathy McMorris-Rodgers released her statement Sunday night calling the events in Charlottesville “heartbreaking and repulsive,” later adding, “I’ve been told some people are trying to connect me to someone who was in Charlottesville. I don’t know this person.” she said. WSU students are set to gather Saturday night at 5 p.m. on the steps of Beasley Coliseum to show solidarity with the counter-protesters in Charlottesville. We reached out to Allsup online and have not received a response.
