A new poll shows the majority of Americans want the Diversity Visa Program eliminated.

The survey by Pulse Opinion Research found 56 percent of Americans want to get rid of the visa program.

Only 33 percent of those surveyed said the program should be kept in place, while 11 percent said they were unsure about whether the program should be thrown out.

The president has long been calling for an end to the program, which granted entry to the suspected New York City attacker.

The president added, he also wants to end chain migration and move to a merit-based system.

The Diversity Visa Program distributes roughly 50,000 visas annually to immigrants from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S.
