Latah County Second District Court Judge John Stegner has been appointed to the Idaho State Supreme Court

Longtime Latah County Second District Court Judge John Stegner has been appointed to the Idaho State Supreme Court.  Governor Butch Otter announced Tuesday that Stegner will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Justice Warren Jones.  Exactly when Judge Stegner will begin serving on the state’s highest court is yet to be determined.  In the meantime, retired judges in the Second Judicial District will temporarily fill the vacancy. 

     The Idaho Judicial Council will begin the process to replace Judge Stegner in the coming days.  The council will issue a notice of the vacancy and then begin accepting applications.  The council will interview the candidates before sending a list of finalists to the governor for the appointment.  Qualified applicants for Latah County Second District Court Judge must live in the county and be a member of the Idaho Bar.  Officials aren’t expecting the appointment to be made until late this Summer.
