House Republicans Push for Vote on Changes to Food Stamp Program

House Republicans are hoping to vote on big changes to the nation’s food stamp program this month.

The federal farm bill — introduced back in April — would add work requirements to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program also known as SNAP.

Able bodied adults under the age of 60 would be required to spend at least 20-hours a week working or attending job training in order to keep receiving benefits.

GOP lawmakers say the changes will help to get more people into the workforce, while reducing strain on the broken welfare system.

However, the legislation faces an uphill battle on Capitol Hill with Democrats strongly opposing it and Republicans split on the issue.
