The Amazon does *not* produce 20% of the Earth’s Oxygen

NewImageIt really, really irks me when I hear people say that the Amazon Rain Forest produces 20% of the earth’s oxygen.

That’s not even remotely close to true.

According to Ecology, Marine algae produce between 70-80% of the oxygen on earth.

Let’s say that the Amazon Rain Forrest produces 20% of the non-algae oxygen, that means that the Amazon region produces 20% of 20%, or about 4%

And that’s the whole Rain Forrest (about the size of Western Europe). The entire Rain Forrest is not on fire.

Bottom line: fires in the Amazon are not the end of civilization.
