But Finkbiner just disproved his case. For 80 years people have been saying we are going to go dry. And here we are, 80 years later, still not dry.
Chicken Little apocalyptic prognostications don’t make it true, regardless of how loudly you repeat it.
I came across the front page of the Moscow “Daily News Review” newspaper from June 4, 1938, (price 5 cents) that was used for insulation when my house was built.
The stories include bombing raids killing thousands in China and Spain, Hitler screaming about the Sudetenland, arguments over the federal budget, and a murder, but on top of page one is a call for building reservoirs because the wells are going dry.
Even then, people saw that water was going to be a problem. Since then, we have drilled deeper, but the water levels keep dropping.
Unfortunately, like a lot of problems, we aren’t very good at taking the long view and finding the most effective solution.
I wonder what the water headlines will be over the next 80 years?
