There is a 96.4% statistical correlation (!) between a) annual US real imports of goods and services and b) annual US civilian employment (the vertical axes are logarithmic scale).
And Trump wants to reduce imports? He’s always crying about the trade deficit. Think what it would do to the US economy to have zero deficit.
Much of this has to do with the fact that the average American thinks that trade deficits are bad, equating it to the national debt. Those are apples and oranges.
