A teenage Muslim girl from Texas was found three months after running away from her parents who arranged a marriage for her and allegedly beat her with a broomstick and poured hot oil on her, Fox News reported.

Maarib Al Hishmawi, 16, was last seen leaving her high school in Bexar County in January. She was found in mid-March and taken in by an organization that is caring for her.

Hishmawi’s parents — Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha Al Hishmawi, 33 — reportedly arranged a marriage for their daughter in exchange for $20,000.

“Several times it was reported to us that this young lady was abused with hot cooking oil being thrown on her body. She was beat with broomsticks,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar added. “At least one point, she was choked almost to the point of unconsciousness.”

Child Protective Services put Hishmawi and her five younger siblings (aged between 5 and 15) in their care, while the parents were arrested and face charges of continuous violence against a family member.

The man whom Hishmawi was supposed to marry may also be charged in the case.
