Here’s the Potlatch School District’s statement. Good for them!

The Potlatch School District released a statement on the decision to host the gun show in the elementary school again this year, saying the gym has been used to host multiple events not related to the district in the past.

“In short, as a small, rural community, the elementary and high school facilities and specifically the gyms are the ‘event centers’ of our community because they are the largest indoor gathering spaces available,” the statement read.

The board said many in Potlatch rely on hunting to feed their families, and guns, as such, “are part of the fabric of our town.”

“Once again, recent events have sadly caused a focus on gun issues on the national level,” the press release states.

“However, we believe this matter is a local issue to be discussed and determined by local patrons. Our practices will continue to reflect the values and needs of our local community.”

The Potlatch Gun Show runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 18 in the Potlatch Elementary School gym. Admission is $3. The Knights of Columbus Sausage Feed will be held 7:30 a.m. to noon in the school cafeteria.
