A high school student in Utah left a backpack containing a homemade bombin the lunch area of the Pine View High School in Saint George. Students who saw the backpack smoking alerted school officials, who called the police.

The school was evacuated and the student was later arrested.

“After examining the device, bomb squad members indicted that if it had detonated, the device had the potential to cause significant injury or death,” read a statement by the police.

“A warrant was served on the residence of that juvenile and items were located that were consistent with the materials used to build the device placed at Pine View. Based on our investigation we can confirm this was a failed attempt to detonate a homemade explosive at the school,” police wrote in a statement.

“It was also determined that the male had been researching information and expressing interest in ISIS and promoting the organization.”

Police believe the suspect, who is male but cannot be named because of his age, is the same person who spray painted graffiti at Hurricane High School (18 miles away in Hurricane, Utah) in mid-February.

In that incident, the high school’s American flag was replaced by what looked like an ISIS flag and the words “ISIS is COMI” were spray-painted on the wall of the school.

At the time, Hurricane police said, “Based on information we received from the FBI we do not believe this act was perpetrated by someone linked to the Islamic State.”
