Brand-new Navy warship trapped in ice till spring

NewImageThis story is of double-interest to me.

“Near-record low temperatures…created significant and historical conditions,” explains US Navy spokesman.

The US Navy’s brand new warship USS Little Rock, unveiled just a month ago, has not moved from Montreal since Christmas Eve and will spend the winter stuck in Canada due to cold and ice.

“Adverse weather conditions” kept the warship trapped at bay in Canada, the Toronto Star reported.

The new warship, which stretches 387 feet in length and cost $440 million to build, is capable of traveling more than 46 miles per hour. However, that capability is rather useless right now.

“The temperatures in Montreal and throughout the transit area have been colder than normal, and included near-record low temperatures, which created significant and historical conditions in the late December, early January time frame,” said Lt.-Cmdr. Courtney Hillson.

Plans had been for the warship to return to its home port in sunny Jacksonville, Florida, via the St. Lawrence Seaway. However, the Seaway has been closed for the winter and does not normally reopen until March.

So much for a Northwest Passage. They can’t even get out of Quebec!
