When unexpected cold hit the Winga Baw camp for orphaned elephants in Myanmar, workers used straw and giant knitted and crocheted blankets to keep them warm.

“We haven’t had weather this cold in 40 years,” said Sangdeaun Lek Chailert, founder of the Save Elephant Foundation, a nonprofit based in Thailand dedicated to Asian elephants.

Temperatures fell to 8°C (46°F) in some parts of the country.

Volunteers also knit blankets for orphaned rhinos.
